Iyla Grace 8.0

Iyla Grace 8.0 was released today with an upgrade to her already-cheery disposition.  It's been a challenging year with the COVID-19 pandemic, the sale of our Austin home, and a move to the country.  Iyla is a reliable source of light and levity in our household.  Her imagination is in constant motion, and her artistry on paper is a joy to observe.

I am grateful to be in her orbit . . . Happy Birthday, Little Buddy!

Eloise Jane 4.0

Eloise Jane version 4.0 comes with no clothing and a canine companion.  Divert your attention and this girl’s clothes are off, she and the new puppy (Stella) are up to mischief … New features include a wicked sense of humor, fearless curiosity for animals and insects, a love of all things "squishy", and an emerging adeptness for pushing her big sister’s buttons ... She still gives the best full-body hugs.

Happy Birthday to my littlest buddy!

Prickly Pear

The Strawberry moon found me tonight
drifting through the shadows.

The moon held court over mischievous stars
dancing in silver pirouettes
along the crests of the clouds.

I recalled the two of us
that summer evening in '92
lying naked in the tall grass,
laughing,
tangled in knots.

You were eighteen.

I was twenty-two.

Your college acceptance letter
perched like a winning lottery ticket
on my dashboard.

We celebrated your escape
with a bottle of gas-station champagne.

I danced around you int he hot moonlight.

You worried we would be seen.

Those were days of innocence and defiance.
The world was remaking itself again:

        old empires loosened their grip;
        a new South Africa
        stepped into the sunlight;
        Soviet flags folded half a world away;
back home, the streets of Los Angelese
        burned for Rodney King.

We watched it idly on the television
and felts its echo
in the small revolutions of a kiss,
your laughter on my chest,
the sweet audacity of being young.

History turned outside our orbit,
and we barely noticed,
believing our turning
was the center of it all.

We did not understand
that time steps through the tall grass
without looking down,
pressing its mark
into everything it touches.

Youth is a clean wound.

You don't feel the sting until
something buried surfaces,
the barb works its way
back through the skin.

I smiled thinking of this
and stepped into the prickly pear,
cutting myself
on the memory of you.

Iyla Grace 7.0

Iyla Grace 7.0 hits the streets today.  Imagination is blooming in this release.  Iyla loves to read and be read to.  She will sit eyes-wide-open for as many films as Mama and Papa permit (no more than one a day).  Iyla is the author of endless stories and enlists her family members to act-out the parts  a favored role for little sister, Eloise, is pet dog ;) ... My heart swells for this kid.  Happy Birthday, Little Buddy!

Other Couples Are Foreign Countries

You can visit them
like one visits Indonesia
or South Africa
or Brazil,

but you are a tourist
encountering
the Chamber-of-Commerce's
promotional exhibit,

the Ministry of Propaganda's
redacted adaptation.

You must venture beyond
the guarded perimeter
to experience the primal truths
of romantic coupling:

        wander stark-naked
        into the wilderness,

        go full native
        with the indigenous,

        sacrifice
        to their heathen gods,

        paint your flesh with
        the blood
        of their enemies.

All are born savage.

The barbarian lurks beneath
a veneer of civility.

Some conceal it more than others,
many from themselves.

This is especially the custom
of social media mavens
who broadcast a tinsel parade
through the capital square
while their union rots
at its foundation.

Each of us is on all fours
with a stranger,

toiling for glimpses
of the transcendent,

seizing them, at best,
enough to prolong
the alliance.

There is nothing to envy
but those magnificent moments
discovered
in your homeland.

Galveston, Texas (2019)

One last gasp of summer before school begins:  Galveston, you won us over with your casual charm, Victorian architecture, friendly locals, the sun, sand and surf.  Eloise met the "big, salty ocean" this week.  Both girls were determined to prove Papa wrong -- "mermaids are real!"  I anticipate a return next summer to continue the search ;)
